Questions
How does it work?
Lead vocals are usually mixed in the centre of a stereo song. Subtracting the left channel from the right cancels anything centred, leaving instruments panned to the sides.
Why can I still hear some vocals?
Reverb, backing vocals and stereo effects are not centred, so they survive. Results depend on how the song was mixed.
Does it work on mono recordings?
No. A mono file has identical channels, so cancelling the centre removes everything.
