How to compress a video for WhatsApp, email or Discord

Make a video file smaller by lowering resolution and bitrate, using FFmpeg running in your browser.

Phone videos are big. Messaging apps and email have size limits, and some will re-compress your video badly if it's too large.

Steps

  1. Open the Video Compressor.
  2. Drop your MP4, MOV or WebM file.
  3. Choose a target — lower resolution (for example 720p) makes the biggest difference.
  4. Start compression. It runs with FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly, on your device.
  5. Download the smaller MP4.

Tips

  • Trim first. Cutting a clip to the part that matters is the easiest saving — use the Video Trimmer.
  • Drop the audio if you don't need it with Mute Video.
  • Compression speed depends on your device; long videos take a while on phones.

Privacy

Home videos and screen recordings can contain personal information. Because everything runs locally, the video never leaves your device.
